K-12 Education
ING -- Unsung Heroes
Application Deadline: May 1, 2006
Description: ING Unsung Heroes began ten years ago as a way for ING to demonstrate its commitment to the education community. The awards are given to K-12 educators pioneering new teaching methods and techniques that improve learning. Each year, educators submit applications for an ING Unsung Heroes award by describing projects they have initiated or would like to pursue. Each project is judged on its:
innovative method
creativity
ability to positively influence students.
Who May Apply: All K-12 education professionals, whether or not they are clients of ING, are eligible. Specifically, these individuals must be:
employed by an accredited K-12 public or private school
full-time educators, teachers, principals, paraprofessionals, or classified staff with effective projects that improve student learning.
Funding Amount: All awards must be used to further the projects within the school or school system. Each of the 100 finalists will receive an award of $2,000. Award checks are made payable jointly to the recipient and to his or her school. At least one award will be granted in each of the 50 United States, provided one or more qualified applications are received from each state. Of the 100 finalists, three will be selected for additional financial awards. The first-place winner will receive $25,000, the second-place winner will receive $10,000, and the third-place winner will receive $5,000.

The Isabel Allende Foundation -- Esperanza Grants
Application Deadlines: Applications are reviewed on a quarterly basis.Submission deadlines for review are January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1.
Description: Grants are awarded to grass-roots organizations working to make the world a safer, more compassionate place for women and children through the development of programs addressing health care, education, literacy, shelter, micro-loans, and the arts. The foundation does not fund capital campaigns; individual trips or tours; conferences or events; and projects that benefit political, religious, and/or military organizations.
Who May Apply: Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations (and equivalent international organizations) are eligible to apply. Individuals are not eligible to receive grants and should not apply. Priority is given to programs in the San Francisco Bay Area and Chile.
Funding Amount: Grants typically range from $500 to $5,000.

Description: The Avon Foundation was founded to improve the lives of women and their families. The Avon Foundation brings this mission to life through two key areas of focus: breast cancer and women's empowerment, with an emphasis on the issue of domestic violence. In its commitment to end domestic violence, the Avon Foundation in the U.S. supports awareness, education, direct services, and prevention programs.
Who May Apply: The Avon Foundation makes grants only to organizations and institutions having tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Libri Foundation -- Books for Children Grant Program
Application Deadlines: There are three deadlines per year: March 15, July 15, and November 15.
Description: The Libri Foundation is a nationwide nonprofit organization that donates new, quality hardcover children's books to small, rural public libraries in the United States through its Books for Children program.
Who May Apply: Libraries may qualify on an individual basis. In general, a library should serve a population under 10,000 (usually under 5,000), have a very limited budget, be in a rural area, and have an active children's department. Please note: "Rural" is usually considered to be at least 30 miles from a city with a population over 40,000.
Funding Amount: Up to $700 per award. The foundation matches local contributions on a 2-to-1 ratio. Thus, a library can receive up to $1,050 worth of new, quality hardcover children's books through the foundation's Books for Children program.

Description: Dollar General's Community Grants program provides support for nonprofit organizations committed to the advancement of youth literacy initiatives.
Who May Apply: Organizations must be located in and providing service within Dollar General's 27-state operating territory. Organizations must be nonprofit/charitable organizations engaged in literacy or basic education programs.
Funding Amount: Typical grant range is $2,500 or less.
